Chinese media shows wrong Indian map, excludes Arunachal Pradesh, J-K

22:26 Posted by Unknown No comments

A controversial map of India that excluded Arunachal Pradesh and Jammu and Kashmir was aired on China's national television broadcaster on Thursday, triggering angry reactions on social media platforms.
The map was shown as a background during a news programme aired on China Central Television (CCTV) soon after Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi landed in Xian early on Thursday.
China's official maps show Arunachal Pradesh as South Tibet and also exclude parts of Jammu and Kashmir, in a move that has become a sore area in the ties between the world's two most populous countries which have bickered long over a Himalayan border dispute and fought a brief, bloody war in 1962.
The development came on a day PM Modi opened his three-day tour of China, and discussed key issues such as terrorism and trade with Chinese President Xi Jinping in a "comfortable" atmosphere.
There was no official reaction from the PM's team, but the timing of the map being shown on television could trigger disquiet among the visiting delegates.
The controversial map cropped up within two days of a racist article in the state-run Global Times newspaper, which called Indians "inferior" and said Modi was playing tricks with the Chinese over the border dispute.
The map was shared multiple times on Twitter and led to angry outbursts.
However, besides the map controversy and the Global Times opinion piece, the Chinese state media has mostly been positive about Modi's visit.
In fact, the Global Times carried out a survey on more than 2,100 people on Modi's visit, asking them for an opinion on Sino-India relations. More than 20% of the people interviewed said they did not want India to consider China as an "imaginary enemy".
More than 24% said India should not trust the US and over 18% respondents said they wished that China and India could work together in various fields.
However, over 66% of those surveyed said they thought that the current visit will not change much in Sino-India relations.
People's Daily, organ of the Communist Party of China (CPC), published an article by the current Chinese ambassador to India, Le Yucheng, which said \the relationship between China and India would soon take off like a "high speed rail".
Another state media article said "Modi was trying to use Yoga-style diplomacy" to improve relationship between the two countries.

Review: ‘Bombay Velvet’ Is a Bollywood Ode to American Gangster Movies

00:19 Posted by Unknown No comments

In the period world of “Bombay Velvet,” Ranbir Kapoor — with his pencil mustache, crop of flyaway hair and broad-shouldered jacket — looks more than a bit like his grandfather Raj Kapoor. And he has some of his raffish, leading-man charm.

Like the elder Kapoor in such films as “Awaara” and “Shree 420,” Ranbir plays an underdog battling the system. He’s Johnny Balraj, a petty gangster who doesn’t mind taking a pounding or doling one out. Johnny runs a nightclub and longs for a piece of the real-estate pie that is Bombay in 1969, a city on the cusp of (over)development.

The director Anurag Kashyap’s cinematic touchstones don’t end with Raj Kapoor. He also has a thing for American gangster movies. There are echoes here of “The Godfather” and “Scarface” (Brian De Palma’s). James Cagney shows up, too; Johnny watches “The Roaring Twenties,” with Cagney dying on snowy steps as a blonde intones, “He used to be a big shot.”

Which is to say that “Bombay Velvet” (great title) is more about movies than it is about gangsters. Mr. Kashyap’s restless camera likes the look of rain on windshields and tommy guns, Art Deco nightclubs and girl singers with beehive ’dos.

If Mr. Kashyap’s previous films, like “Ugly” and “That Girl in Yellow Boots,” have had an indie, sometimes arty sensibility, here, and in the ambitious “Gangs of Wasseypur,” he paints on a bigger canvas, or perhaps a bigger screen, wedding indie impulses and Bollywood storytelling. For much of its first half, “Bombay Velvet” hums with the kind of energy found in movies by the 1970s American directors Mr. Kashyap seems to admire. (Martin Scorsese is thanked in the head credits.)

Mr. Kashyap is perhaps too faithful to his Bollywood imperatives, though. In the grand tradition, his film is overlong (149 minutes) and overplotted. (It’s hard to keep track of all the dirty deals and dirty dealers carving up Bombay.) And just when you expect it to explode some of the clichés it reinvigorates, it embraces them instead.

Still, as one fast operator tells our hero, “The map of Bombay is being redrawn, Johnny.” Even with its faults, Mr. Kashyap’s film is more evidence that the map of Bollywood is, too.

HOT PICTURES: Westminster or bust, sexy selfie queen Karen Danczuk to be Parliament pin-up

21:16 Posted by Unknown No comments

No stranger to the smartphone - or long-lens camera - Mrs Danczuk has made a career of showcasing her talents, and now hopes to showcase her political ideas too, as a Member of Parliament.
The Rochdale borough councillor, who is also wife of Labour MP Simon Danczuk, has outlined her ambition to get into Westminster claiming she wants to bring Parliament “back down to reality”.
Mrs Danczuk, 31, claims current female MPs don’t relate to the modern day woman, and believes images like these in our gallery do.
She told LBC radio: “There’s not many women that can relate to women.
“The women we do have in politics – and I’m not being rude to them because they’re really, really good – are they relating to ordinary women? I think they could relate a bit more.”
Mrs Danczuk has become famed for her selfies, with some of the latest being taken lying on the sofa and ready for bed.
Yesterday she tweeted an image of herself in a bubble bath stating: “Lay in the bubble bath, candles lit with a glass of fizz desperately trying to get on top of Facebook messages KD.
She claims to be the only female councillor to make international news.
Her views are currently less about the election and more about selfie perfection, but Mrs Danczuk looks unlikely to change her tack if she targets a seat in 2020 .
